There are many flashy e-commerce platforms out there that all brag about their superiority. How to know which e-commerce cart system is best? What does Volusion have vs Shopify or Magento?

More appropriately, which is the best fit for your business and what you want to accomplish. I consult with new e-commerce stores every week on many different platforms. In my multi-million dollar e-commerce journey since 2005, I’ve seen a ton of them. However, I keep coming back to Magento vs Big Commerce vs Volusion vs Shopify as the main players I see clients using.

I’m only reviewing the key decision-making features of each cart. The best match will weigh heavily on your current eCommerce skillset, budget and product catalog. Keep in mind the feature sets of these platforms are ever-changing so before making a decision, please visit each provider’s website for current info.

Volusion E-commerce Cart

I started my first ecom business with Volusion and it’s sad to see how far they’ve fallen recently. In a desperate attempt to retool their business model they are now saddling their customers with a merchant fee. They are trying to copy Shopify’s model except their platform doesn’t hold a candle to Shopify. I’ve used them both extensively with current and past clients and Shopify is smarter, faster and on the cutting edge of new tech and integrations.

Volusion has all the standard features of an entry-level cart and is a great solution for beginner merchants on a budget. In 2019 Volusion released a helpful e-commerce for beginners course which outlines the key elements of starting an e-commerce business. I really like the way they are approaching it with a holistic, ground-up look at building an e-com store and more of a “business”.

Volusion now takes a piece of your sales

So…Volusion is really easy to setup but…beware of the merchant fee they will charge you on every order (this was just released 6/1/2023). Volusion hosts the site for you and it’s pretty much ready to go out of the gate but they take a piece of every sale much like Shopify does. Volusion is now pushing their Stripe payment gateway, which is not very competitive but they’re giving Volusion a piece of each transaction so I get it. Shopify is a much more mature offering with 10x the features so yeah, I’m pretty ok with them taking a tiny piece of each sale.

Features:

Volusion no longer has design services to set up your graphics 100% , they used to have a great team there but it’s fallen by the wayside. Their templates are pretty rough but they will do the job.

Recently Volusion came out with their new Volusion Ecommerce Website Builder thing which so far I’m not sold on. They bragged about their new website builder and didn’t know I was a consultant. I had them give me a demo and tested their load times and it was awful on the 3 demo sites we tested. I honestly felt bad for them.

They used to have some easy turnkey marketing packages, including Adwords and CSE channels to get you started fast. Those have degraded a lot since I used them in the past and they are pretty average, but they are easy to set up and everything is under one roof and it’s cheap.

Volusion offers a no-frills way to get online.

Their support as of late has declined a lot, and there’s only basic Indians (dot not feather) support that seems to just read from their online guide and nothing more, unfortunately. It’s pretty hard to get legit help if you need it with Volusion, but you probably won’t need it much if you’re just running a small store and want something easy.

While you can do a lot with this platform, I don’t recommend it for experienced e-commerce entrepreneurs doing 10m+. If you are doing 10m+ you’ll want to check out another platform. Many Volusion users graduate to Big Commerce. Big Commerce vs Volusion is not much of a comparison, honestly. Big Commerce is set up to help larger, more organized businesses compared to Volusion which is really only set up for SMB type businesses that don’t require a lot of features.

I also recommend either Stone Edge (SE) Order Manager or Shipstation for use with any of the platforms I’m reviewing here. The big difference between Shipstation and Stone Edge is Shipstation is mainly just for shipping, and Stone Edge is a full suite of Order Management tools.

Volusion Onsite Search Capability

Volusion has a decent search feature right out of the box, which is worthy of note. The latest Magento release has such a poor search it’s unusable. Volusion’s search is intuitive for customers, and it just works. When you outgrow it, and you’re doing 1MM+ a year you can easily upgrade to an AI type smart search like Search Spring which is easily integrated for a monthly fee and well worth it once you have the volume. Search Spring on last check cost around $800-$1000 a month for the general package as of 5/2023.

Volusion Built-in CRM

Something unique about this platform is the robust built-in CRM. Neither Magento nor Big Commerce has this built-in. The Volusion CRM ties emails from customers directly to their orders and customer account with links. The people at Volusion that know how powerful this feature is are gone. I started my store with Volusion in 2005 and that feature was a godsend. The built-in CRM allows organized customer communication about backorders, tracking, custom orders, purchasing, receiving you name it. It’s basic but it’s tied to the customer orders which is super helpful.

This is one of the highlights of this platform for me, and it can streamline customer service significantly. Typically, you’ll pay $25-$60 per user for Zendesk or other CRM solutions and the integration will vary.

Volusion also has a basic affiliate marketing system built in. You can automatically issue bloggers and affiliate websites referral links for a revenue share/commission (you set the rate).

I have personally used this system to increase backlinks and generate excitement in my early days of e-commerce. This little affiliate system can be a powerful tool in the right hands and it works like it’s supposed to.

Volusion 3rd Party Integration Capability

Volusion states they integrate with around 75 different 3rd party software on last check; however, it’s bullshit, unfortunately. Their integrations are not native, and all of them reference platform agnostic type software, which you’ll have to do some customization when you install them.

As far as integrations go, Volusion uses ASP.net framework, which is really hard to integrate with, so don’t expect anything to integrate with it easily.

I tried to integrate Klaviyo recently and the Volusion team wasn’t able to help at all and pointed us to help articles. Volusion was never that way in the past. I learned this is a new outsourced tech support that their investors wanted…and the results are terrible for Volusion users.

I pestered the hell out of them for answers on this Klaviyo integration for my client, and… their answer was horrifying. They said to revert your Volusion checkout to our old legacy one-page checkout and you can use Klaviyo. Lol. Their suggestion was to degrade our checkout system to a really poor checkout so we could integrate with Klaviyo…lol. The client would have lost a ton of sales to use Klaviyo; needless to say that client is done with Volusion.

Big Commerce E-commerce Cart

Big Commerce (BC) is a great starting point for new online retailers as it is scalable and offers an upgrade to full Enterprise level features. It’s a hosted service (like Volusion), and you can start out around $80 with a decent entry-level package and jump up to their Enterprise custom solution when you’re ready. This platform is the poor man’s Magento with hand-holding and has much more flexibility than Volusion.

Big Commerce Home Page ExampleThe Enterprise version can be expanded to advanced customizations if needed. BC is a low liability implementation since it’s completely hosted by BC (unlike Magento). Big Commerce will customize the Enterprise site exactly how you want it including graphics and feature set.

There is a big advantage to having the host do the implementation. It lessens the liability of conflict from different developers/extensions on the site and BC also knows their code well since that’s all they work on. BC will also help you with full migration from your current platform and general marketing direction which is great for beginners.

Big Commerce Features

Big Commerce has all the standard features of an intermediate platform out of the box. BC Features a built-in blog which, notably, Volusion does not. With content marketing so huge now and everyone trying to appease “the google”, an integrated blog is more important than ever. BC has this baked in.

On the other hand, no matter what you do, Volusion won’t allow a blog on their server as it is a security risk. Magento will host a blog internally using extensions, including integrated WordPress options.

BC (and Magento) has comprehensive eBay integration, which I would take full advantage of if it makes sense for your market and strategy.

Although Ebay is typically an ancillary market for most, it can certainly add to your market share and presence, especially if it’s integrated and easy to manage.

BC (and Volusion) have Comparison Shopping Engine (CSE) feeds ready to connect you to customers for some quick channels to add which are valuable and easy to set up.

Big Commerce has Alibaba integration which is interesting, I haven’t played with this yet but it could be advantageous depending on your product category.

Big Commerce Reporting

The reporting in Big Commerce and Volusion are pretty good overall. Strangely Magento reporting is awful in comparison. BC offers a great built-in Abandoned Cart Email tool which is easy to configure, Magento has one but it’s a nightmare to set up and Volusion requires a 3rd party to set one up for a handsome monthly fee.

BC has a really inexpensive $29.95/mo entry-level price with a 1.5% revenue share which really is a pretty great deal. This is a great option for new sellers on a budget that doesn’t want the liability of a huge site build and the liability that comes with it. You can upgrade to the PLUS package for $79.95/mo with more features and no revenue share.

They also offer an Enterprise solution which is a custom, big bucks offering that starts at $20k but their team will customize pretty much any functionality you want and it’s on them for implementation follow-through. Shopify and Shopify Plus

Shopify is a terrific platform for new online retailers that don’t need a lot of customization. There are a wide variety of apps for this platform, but in the past, they’ve fallen short with advanced features. No longer the case.

They market to small brick-and-mortar shop owner that wants to sell online. It’s quite a good match for that type of business. Recently Shopify has beefed up their offering to serve larger B2B markets and Enterprise level businesses.

 

Shopify and Shopify Plus are both hosted solutions. This means Shopify hosts your website and takes care of updates. Magento CE and EE, on the other hand, are both self-hosted solutions. That means as a Magento store owner, you are responsible for hosting, updates and yes, when your website crashes you are responsible for it. See Magento section below for more on this.

Shopify does basic app integrations with shipping solutions like Shipstation or Countdown Timer’s like Amazon are available and work well. There are also some really cool personalization type apps like PrintFul or Teelaunch. Keep in mind many of the more serious apps come with a monthly cost and are still limited to their initial feature-set. Meaning, any customizations or improvements, feature requests, heck yeah, those are going to be extremely expensive if the developer will even entertain the idea.

So what can Shopify suck at? Unfortunately, it doesn’t do B2B or Multistore at this time. Magento still rules the roost in those areas.

An area that Shopify clearly dominates is awesome templates! This is a really key ingredient in the look and feel of your store and Shopify has some absolutely killer templates. Also note, not only are they attractive and smart but they are super responsive!! Check out a sample below in Desktop and Mobile View.

I asked a Shopify rep early in my research about customization for a client site and customizing some apps for Shopify. They said that for even the basic customizations I requested, we’d have to use Shopify Plus, which is a whole wildly different beast.

Shopify, in general, is only $29-$299 (as of Jan 2019) plus the transaction fee if you’re using a 3rd party payment gateway. That’s actually great value in general for many small startups. Shopify Plus starts at around $15000/year or more. That doesn’t include all the work for the customizations a serious eCommerce store needs to have a clear market advantage. A typical Shopify Plus with customized functionality and template will run you about $30-$60k+.

The biggest difference between Shopify Plus and Magento Commerce (Magento Enterprise) is the flexibility in the back end. Magento Commerce is incredibly modular and the website manager has impressive access to most of it. This also allows the website manager to get into serious trouble if not properly trained. However, if you have an e-commerce ninja onboard, Magento Commerce can absolutely rock your competitors and have some killer features.

 

Shopify has some very cool for small brick and mortar looking to get online, build in POS. Before you get too excited, realize you’ll pay a small surcharge to charge cards through Shopify but it’s typically worth it. Having the Omni-Channel integration is a key element and keeping things integrated and simple has its advantages.

When you use Shopify Plus, you are able to contact developers through Shopify and yes, it’s regulated and a little weird. This is good and bad. Shopify wants to ensure their development partners are solid, using best practices, so things don’t break. It makes sense but just realize it’s much more locked down than Magento. Shopify got beat up back in the day for not having any way to import additional fields like Magento hosts. Magento uses Attribute sets which as groups of individual attribute fields. They are super powerful and set Magento apart in the industry until recently.

Shopify’s answer is Meta Fields. Basically, these are custom fields you can use to host data to be used in any way you desire on the platform. Very cool and super powerful.

This is a great choice for online retailers that want it all and have a budget for implementation of $35-150k. Cheap development comes out expensive on this one. Do your research, find a good development team and spend the money.

Magento is one of the premier e-commerce platforms and it’s free! But here’s the rub, Magento is a self-hosted solution so you have to pay for your own hosting and CE (Community Edition Version) has limited features.

 

A recent call with a friend at Magento suggested the gap in features between their Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE) will widen greatly over the coming year(s).

In general, Magento is the most robust platform on the market in all regards but it’s difficult to implement properly. I would only recommend this platform to intermediate or advanced merchants that agree to hire a specialized Magento development partner and host.

If you attempt to set this up yourself and hack it together, you will waste years of your life you’ll simply never get back, take it from me, I was that guy back in 2008. Getting some (expensive) professional help with Magento setup is absolutely required and can exponentially increase your speed to market and success. All said, Magento is a powerhouse in the right hands.

Magento is one of the most powerful platforms available in the world and also the deadliest. I compare this platform to the likes of riding a pissed-off dragon, it can slay the market and your competitors or simply eat you alive.

This is especially true with hobbyist e-commerce entrepreneurs experimenting with the CE version. This has resulted in many misleading reviews that Magento is slow, this is 99% due to novice setup, poor implementation, and inadequate hosting.

Please note: In the wrong hands Magento can destroy an otherwise healthy business, I’ve witnessed this happen and it’s not pretty.

In my first e-commerce venture Paradise Fibers we dominated competitors suing Magento Commerce (EE) and watched a respected competitor of ours attempted to copy us and switch their .asp site to Magento with their in-house .asp developer team. #dumpsterfire

We watched them flounder, launch, then retreat back to their old site, launch again, lose all their rank, then eventually go out of business within a year. THIS PLATFORM CAN BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN, but it can also make you a bundle of money if you set it up responsibly and respect the dragon.

Looking back, if my competitor would have just hired a consultant to help them navigate Magento it would have cost them pennies on the dollar compared to what they likely spent crashing through it on their own with a crappy developer.

Magento can work really smooth when you have an experienced Magento professional involved. I’ve personally watched companies double their net profit YOY after switching to a well-designed Magento Commerce website build.

This is one of the most flexible/customizable platforms in the world for any price. Magento Extensions (plugins) are a huge part of the customization.

However, be aware that many of the developers that create these extensions are foreigners with varying levels of expertise. Some are terrific and the extensions are well tested, others are a joke and just break your website. Check the reviews before you buy any extension.

Also, make sure you test it on your development website. Yeah, that sounds like a hassle but working with a Magento pro takes care of all that and they will have a responsible deployment procedure in place for you (like we do for our clients). This involves testing on a development site and deploying to the production environment (live site) so you can minimize possible downtime.

Extensions range from advanced reviews, blogs, rewards programs and affiliate programs to deal of the day, quick view, sliders and more. Magento is the only platform out there that can truly do it all.

In Magento, you can set up what are called Attribute Sets. This feature makes Magento stand out for merchants with large catalogs.

It offers an easy to use an attribute filter to allow customers to find products fast. If set up properly Layered Navigation can be the cornerstone to a well-merchandised online store.

Setting up Attribute sets for each product type allows your store to offer increased relevancy throughout the customer browsing experience. For example, computers would have custom fields like (RAM, hard drive size, processor) and Camera’s would have custom fields like (Lens, battery life, Megapixels).

These fields, when filled out properly are presented in the filters when shopping and also on the product page as specifications. Having this information in place provides efficient catalog structure and improves the customer experience and conversions.

The new online merchandiser in EE is a robust way to arrange items in categories. This functionality is like featured items on steroids allowing preferential placement of items within categories manually and based on rules.

Magento also has a unique multi-store hosting feature which allows multiple e-commerce stores that can share inventory listings on one installation of Magento.

This can be very useful if your store sells wholesale and retail and shares the same product data or if you simply want to have multiple retail stores that are marketed differently. You can also easily toggle what specs/attributes are displayed on product pages which is something BC or Volusion can’t touch.

Another unique feature of Magento is the ability to segment customers. Magento can show your customers banners, send them emails, offer them coupons and more based on many customer behavior rules. This feature can be very powerful with large customer bases and traffic volume but isn’t as relevant for small budget startups initially.

Looking for a turnkey template for Magento Commerce? You are out of luck. There are many robust templates for CE but not for EE, it’s weird. Apparently, Magento expects EE users to completely start from scratch when building their site and that’s pretty much what you have to do. A new installation of Magento needs a lot of configuration to even start presenting catalog listings.

What are the drawbacks of purchasing a template for Magento Community Edition (CE)?

Also, if you’re thinking about just buying a template for CE and posting listings…yeah you can do that, but there’s a price to be paid. So, long term you’re going to want stuff like Rewards Programs, Upsell Popups and fun stuff like that to increase sales and AOV, herein lies the problem.

When you purchase a template you get a ton of functionality included…good and bad. Short term you’ll love a few of the little features and learn to use them. After a few months, you’re going to want additional functionality. You’re going to buy some plugins and have your developer install them, then stuff is going to break and be very hard to fix. But why?

When you purchase a Magento Community Template you’re getting a bloated website. Yes, there’s no way you’re going to use all of the features the designer built-in. You never want any extra unused extensions/features in Magento if you can help it as it slows Magento down and increases the chance for conflicts.

Extension conflicts aren’t a big deal with a Magento custom website that’s built properly. But when you have a template-based site, your developer is going to have a much harder time settling in new features and extensions. Templates are a great tool for simple websites but in the long term, they limit your ability to customize Magento which…is why you’re using it in the first place. If you’re using Magento (CE) because it’s free, it’s not, you should understand the cost of ownership after ready this article and others on my site.

How do I find a good quality host for Magento? Finding a quality partner to navigate the perilous waters of Magento is tricky. You will need an experienced, high-quality development team and hosting company.

That said, like any robust tool, Magento has a surprisingly high cost of ownership. Even for the free CE version, you need good hosting starting at around $200/mo and Enterprise/Commerce is around $650/mo.
